Established in 1978, the Rooty Hill Chess Club meets on Tuesday nights at 7.15 pm at Rooty Hill RSL (West HQ). Visitors and new members are always welcome and can expect a friendly reception.
As one of the largest and best chess clubs in Sydney, whatever your playing strength, you can always find somebody who enjoys playing a game at your particular level. Our club has various members ranging from young juniors to retirees. The most modern and best chess equipment is provided by the Rooty Hill Chess Club, with weighted sets and a quiet playing area. All of our events are also both FIDE and ACF rated, allowing you to obtain a rating! We are the only chess club in Sydney to FIDE rate all of our events.
You are welcome to play in our tournaments as a non-member by registering through our website. If you decide to become a member for the year, the fee is $35 for adults, $25 for concession and full-time students and $20 for juniors (U18), which entitles you to discounted and free entry depending on the tournament and the Club Championships is also a member’s only event.
All Chess Club Members also need to be Members of West HQ.
For an additional fee of $20, the club will pay your membership to the NSW Chess Association.
During the year, the club hosts four annual Classical Tournaments. The Summer Cup and Autumn Swiss, the Rooty Hill FIDE Open and the Club Championships (restricted to club members only).
On the nights when there are no Classical tournaments, we host a variety of other chess events with various time controls, such as Rapid (20 minutes + 10 seconds), Allegro (10 minutes) and Blitz (5 min). We may also run simuls and other events if they are available and scheduled into our calendar.

What are the benefits of membership?
When you become a Rooty Hill Chess Club member, this entitles you to discounted entry into our tournaments and free entry in some of them! Additionally, membership allows you to play in all Rooty Hill Chess Club events, such as the Club Championships, which is restricted to members only.
How do I play in the tournaments?
You are welcome to play in our tournaments by registering for them on our website! Information and entry details for our tournaments can be found on their respective pages, available on the right sidebar of the website when they are open for registration.
If you are a non-member, you're more than welcome to register directly on our website, and you'll be included in the tournament! Just make sure that you receive a booking confirmation email from us. If you do, we've received your entry, and all you need to do is turn up to the night!
If you are a member, you'll receive access to the Members' Portal on our website, as well be emailed links to access the discounted members' entry links.
